Kirk is one of the most intense drummers around today ! On my top five ! I am going to the Modern Drummer Festival next Saturday, May 28 where Kirk will be performing with Danny Carey in their new band !

Both on record and live, he leaves me cold. Just my opinion though...the guy can obviously play amazing stuff.

You know, you have to see Kirk perform "Live" to appreciate what kind of "musician" he is. It's the way he plays, the dynamics, the intensity.

And being a big guy, it's fantastic to see how soft he can play, but, watch out, he can explode into the craziest chops you've ever seen.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I've seen him live several times (even bought his band a round of drinks once). Doesn't do it for me. Larrie Londin was a big guy too, and HE blew me away. I loved his playing.

Don't get me wrong though. Kirk is totally one of the greats out there, but there's something I can't put my finger on that rubs me the wrong way. I get the same feeling about Dennis Chambers - even if I like what he's playing, something about his touch/sound/tone leaves me cold.

BTW 'Groovissimo', i'm sure you already know this, but 'Kirk' is also an accomplished pianist as well as being a human tornado on the drums. I saw him playing piano with a straight ahead jazz band at the 'Montreal Drumfest' a few years back, and he was wailin' ! [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

I would have to disagree about the "coldness" of Kirk. I think he has that special "something" that makes him different than a lot of the other drummers.

He does tend to go a tad overboard in his soloing, but he can lay it down with the big boys.

That "something" I mentioned is what I like about Vinnie and find empty with Weckl. I don't know, maybe it's the go for it attitude. But if you listen to some of the recordings on Face First, and that era of TT, man, he crushes it.

He is also a killer keyboardist and can sing the Blues as well.

On top of all that, he is a great guy to hang with.

Just my opinion though.

Kirk's solo on The Big Wave from Illicit is one of my favorite drum solos. He has an identifiable sound; I agree about the go for it attitude, it's refreshing to hear that.

I agree, I dig KC, he just goes for it. He can be OTT, as can ALL the "big boys" [literally, with regards to him], but oh well, wth, ya either likes it or ya don't. It either "hits ya" or it doesn't.

Man, yesterday I was just playing along with the Sco tune Loud Jazz for the first time, & figuring out all the kicks & rhythm changes [listened to it many times; just never tried to play along, BION], & MAN, he's just incredibly groovalicious & musical on there...his feel is incredible, even when he's playing a little bright[ly]...yep, Loud Jazz, Pick Hits, & Blue Matter have some wicked rhythmic-groovin' stuff. Chambers is one of my [many] all-time faves. [img]cool.gif[/img]
